The book starts with Sprang Anatomy, illustrating and explaining why S & Z sprang cloth exhibits this unique texture. Then each of the stitches is clearly shown and described.

Boxes with important tidbits such as Reading the Cloth, Working Left Handed, Yarn Suggestions, and Tips for Success are sprinkled throughout the book. Variations and Play boxes invite the reader to go beyond the patterns, playing with the techniques to create new motifs.

The bulk of the book contains patterns for 27 motifs, divided into three sections of increasing difficulty: Building Blocks, Ancient Explorations, and Modern Explorations. Each motif includes a photo, a description of the motif, a chart, and a written pattern.

BUILDING BLOCKS starts with rows of S and Z stitches. Several variations provide a chance to master both S and Z before moving on to diamonds and vertical stripes.

ANCIENT EXPLORATIONS combines the building blocks into motifs inspired by sprang hairnets from about 1500 years ago found in Egypt. Motifs include nested diamonds, diagonals, chevrons, basket weave, and tessellated diamonds. MODERN

EXPLORATIONS delves further into the unique textures created by S & Z sprang. These advanced motifs were inspired by Peter Collingwood’s 1974 book The Techniques of Sprang.

Note: This is NOT a beginner book and does NOT have instructions for warping the frame or finishing the cloth.

As this is the first printing of the book, we are still finding minor errors in the words and figures. For a full listing of these errors, see the errata page.
