Intertwining

In intertwined sprang, pairs of threads twine around each other, moving diagonally to create a sturdy cloth.
Intertwining is a common structure in ancient Peruvian textiles, but is rarely seen in the European textile record.

Basic Intertwining

In basic intertwining, two pairs of threads cross and twine around each other at each intersection. The twining can occur around the top thread or bottom thread of each pair, or with one pair hidden between the other pair, providing numerous design possibilities.

Eight Thread  Intertwining

In eight thread intertwining, one pair of threads twines around two pairs of threads, and then a second pair twines around those same two pairs of threads.  This creates an open pattern similar to basic intertwining, but with doubled threads.

Six Thread Intertwining

In six thread intertwining one pair of threads twines around two pair of threads. This creates a denser cloth than other intertwining structures.

Comparison

Basic intertwining has an open structure, six thread intertwining creates a denser cloth, and eight thread intertwining creates a denser version of the basic structure.

Intertwined Lace

Intertwining can be combined with twisted threads to create intertwined lace.
